Lenten Study: Handel's Messiah

Handel’s oratorio Messiah is one of the best-loved musical compositions of all time. In this study, we are going to take advantage of that love and use it as an avenue into the biblical texts on which Messiah is based, focusing on the Easter portion of the oratorio. The Christmas section of the oratorio was covered this past Advent season, but it is not necessary to have attended that one to participate in this Lent Study. You may wish to bring a Bible in order to look up scripture passages.

We will meet every Tuesday from March 4th to April 8th in the OBUC Chapel (off the kitchen). For more information, contact Rev. Sarah!

Introduction to Contemplative Practices

Learn to Meditate

We live in a time of major change and transition. Daily life is filled with competing demands and we often feel stressed and overwhelmed. It can be difficult to find our centre, to remain focused. This meditation workshop is designed to help us reconnect us with our sacred centre and regain a sense of wholeness during a fractured time. This event will take place in the Oak Bay United Church Sanctuary (entrance via Granite St.) and is hosted by the Contemplative Network of South Vancouver Island in association with Oak Bay United Church.

Accessibility: for those with limited mobility, the OBUC Sanctuary can be reached by an accessibility lift, located off Granite Street, just east of the main entrance ramp.

These Meditation Practices will:
★ Allow us to rest in the present moment
★ Teach us to let go of regrets about the past and worry about the future
★ Help us to live out of the fullness of who we truly are, letting go of our attachment to the daily dramas of life.

We will learn and practice:
★ The prayer of silent meditation (Centering Prayer)
★ Lectio Divina (contemplative reading of scripture)
★ Practicing mindfulness in daily life (letting go and being fully present)

Our gathering includes an introduction to several meditation/contemplative practices, doing the practice, and discussion about integrating the practice into our daily lives. The workshops are facilitated by experienced contemplative teachers Linda Mulhall and Henri Lock

All are welcome, regardless of experience. Fee: Pay from the Heart, as you are able, $0 to $25 at the door.

Please register for the workshop by emailing your name to contemplativenetwork@gmail.com or by following the link below:
